The Story of Caïssa

The game of business is one of strategy, risks and rewards.

In order to navigate the world of business, you need strategy. It's a tactical game. A game of give and take. Surviving takes equal parts patience and persistence. A little bit of luck goes a long way and long hours are the order of the day.

Strategy Is Necessary to Stay in the Game

In this kind of life, you need someone in your corner. Life in business can mimic a chess game, and often you are at the table in a high stakes game, forced to make decisions alone. Caïssa originated earlier in time, in a poem published in a book called Scacchia Ludus in 1527 by Hieronymus Vida, which describes in Latin a chess game between the gods Apollo and Mercury in the presence of other gods. Caïssa, the legendary mythological creature, is now known as the Goddess of Chess, and was later notoriously described in a poem called Caïssa written in 1763 by English poet and philologist Sir William Jones.

  • “Caissa, the Goddess of Chess, had punished me for my conservative play, for betraying my nature”.

A Trusted Advisor Always By Your Side

Caïssa is more recently referred to in chess commentary by Garry Kasparov, the famous Russian chess grandmaster, former World Chess Champion, writer, and political activist, whom many consider to be the greatest chess player of all time. In his written five-volume work My Great Predecessors, it is used as a substitute for being fortunate — "Caïssa was with me" — especially in unclear situations, for example in sacrifices. Garry is also notoriously quoted for saying "Caïssa, the Goddess of Chess, had punished me for my conservative play, for betraying my nature".
